I went to see Maggie Yer Ma In The Grand Opera House Belfast last night. It’s been years since I have been there. In fact, I think the last play I saw there was when I was a child. My daughters go every year with my mum for their yearly Christmas treat to see the Pantomime. Its been such a huge talking point in my house for years. So last night saw me returning to the stalls to see something myself.
Maggie Yer Ma
Leesa Harker a best selling author and playwright brings us this absolutely hilarious show. Directed by Andrea Montgomery and starring the critically acclaimed Caroline Curran. Maggie Yer Ma. What can I say? What an amazing performance. From the minute I sat down to the minute it finished I belly laughed. The story was based on Maggie Muff a Belfast mum to Processo who found herself bringing her up alone as her boyfriend Billy was in Jail. It centred around her hilarious nights out in the Shebeen, working in the local Chinese, her Uncle Martin and his Thai wife Icecream. Not shy of some amazing one-liners, Belfast chat and a good few swear words thrown in for good measure, Maggie Muff had the tears tripping me. Even during the more serious parts including her mums passing the Leesa Harker the writer added twists and turns that had us in stitches. I can honestly say that I will never be able to listen to Another Level Freak Me again without imagining Maggie frolicking with Billy after his early and surprise release from jail which included poor Billy running his hands up Maggie’s forest-like hairy legs haha.
To really appreciate the humour its a perfect night out for the girls/boys. The show is running until the 16th June and there are tickets available from the GOH website which is linked below.
